January 2010 (Tokyo, Japan) — Nikken Sekkei was rated the world’s top architecture practice by BD World Architecture in the January 2010 issue of the magazine. The rating was based on number of architects on staff.
This represented a jump from the number five spot that Nikken recorded last year, a “seemingly impossible feat” considering the global recession according to the magazine. Among the factors contributing to Nikken’s rise was its “broad spread of skills and track record in many sectors” and strategy of targeting “less volatile sectors such as education and medical facilities.” In addition, the firm “won prestigious national awards for its Rikkyo University Tachikawa Hall.”
In terms of total creative staff (technologists, engineers, urban planners, interior designers and others), Nikken ranked sixth worldwide in the same survey.
Nikken also turned in strong showings for five key disciplines when evaluated by fee income. These were architectural services (first), urban design (first), construction management (second), engineering (second) and facilities management (third).
Other results of the survey showed Nikken as the Pacific Rim leader in income and among the top seven worldwide in the following market sectors: business parks/offices, education, residential, retail and transportation.
Citing Nikken’s success in the highly competitive Asian and Middle East markets, the magazine signaled that the company’s goal to broaden its worldwide network may make it a significant player in Europe and America in the near future.
