This museum was constructed with a philosophy of enhancing the codependent relationship between people and the environment of Lake Biwa and boasts one of the largest freshwater aquariums in Japan. The building is situated so as to best showcase the splendor of the lake against the backdrop of the surrounding mountains. On the lake side of the building, a large crescent-shaped planar roof, inspired by the hull of the Maruko Ship (a traditional ship used on Lake Biwa), was built over a public area consisting of the lobby and restaurants. The results artfully echo the vast expanse of Japan's largest lake.
