Outline

This aquarium is situated against the backdrop of the precipitous Mt. Takasaki, overlooking the wide expanse of Beppu Bay. To make the best of this outstanding location, the building comprises open roof plaza and was designed as low a profile as possible. An enormous 1,250-ton tank, a marine animal performance stage, and a large "touch pool" were installed as key attractive features for new levels of comfort and interaction with water creatures. Tanks with complex shapes and varying floor heights allow visitors to observe marine life from numerous angles. Unity of architectural design and display functions was pursued in all aspects of the project.
