With an objective to use it for the preservation research and the exhibition of Dunhuang Cave, one of the eminent world heritages in China, this exhibition center is established in order to protect the cave from natural decay, such as fissures & collapse of the cave, as well as discoloration, wear and tear of its wall paintings. The project is fully subsidized by the Japanese government.
The research area is mainly focused on the scientific study on the preservation of the cave and its cultural assets, while it also performs the registration and classification of films, records and documents.
The exhibition space consists of 8 full-scale models of the cave describing different eras in the past, wall painting replicas and unearthed items. The exhibition not only provides an easy understanding of the Dunhuang art to the visitors, but also contributes to the protection of the cave by enabling researchers to perform the research without the need of physical visits to the precious site.
