This hospital reconstruction project took place at a facility that had served as the center for psychiatric treatment on the Amami Islands for 43 years. The new building design emphasizes patient safety, expanded treatment capability, and cost reduction through utilization of natural energy such as the use of abundant well water for increased air conditioning efficiency. New types of wards were built, as well as so-called "Wind Terrace" rooms allowing patients to comfortably enjoy the gentle natural breeze. A healing atmosphere was achieved using deep eaves, careful attention to light and shadow, and rustic materials to create a feeling of warmth.
