Here, in this research institute, people working in different academic fields from around the world gather to study and discuss the global environment. It was designed with spaces conducive to spontaneous exchange among researchers. The result is an atmosphere that is both open and soothing, from its non-partitioned research areas to public spaces and a cozy lounge. Traditional-style tiled roofs and dark-charred cedar boards evoke quintessential Japanese aesthetics amid a verdant mountain environment. Computer-aided natural ventilation and dimmer control systems make for a 40% reduction of environmental loads, resulting in an energy-saving architecture befitting the ecological purpose of the institute.
