Since 1927, the old Kobe Customs headquarters had served as a symbol of Kobe port, but the structure was damaged in the Great Hanshin Earthquake. When renewing the site, changes were made to portions of the original building in order to create a new structure that would connect with the original two wings. This enabled preservation of original design elements while allowing for advanced information systems imperative for customs activities and higher stories with a contemporary feel. The two wings surround a courtyard, and a five-story atrium welcomes the public. Kobe's graceful new landmark is a consummate blend of tradition and innovation.
