"Centrair" was constructed on a reclaimed island 35 kilometers from Nagaya as a new air gateway to the Central Region of Japan, home to many of Japan's leading manufacturers, most notably the automobile industry. Consequently Centrair is also expected to handle significant commercial cargo volumes. The passenger terminal was planned according to universal design principles including: a) Arrival and departure levels separated to minimize level changes, b) Provision of gently sloping walkways, c) Maximum 300m walking distance through compact design, d) Combined domestic and international services in one building, e) Inspection of checked baggage after passenger check-in reduces waiting time.
