Ichiro Mukai joined Nikken Sekkei after completing his master's degree in engineering at Kyoto University in 1989. In 1995, his team won the Sendai Airport passenger terminal building design competition. Since then, he has been in charge of designing airport facilities such as Asahikawa Airport and the New Chitose Airport International PTB, as well as integrated station-city development facilities such as Cubic Plaza Shin-Yokohama, Kirarina Keio Kichijoji, Trie Keio Chofu, and Shibuya Scramble Square. In 2019, he was in charge of editing the book "Integrated Station-City Development: TOD Recipe 46" (published by Shinkenchiku-sha). He was also involved in the design for restoring Sendai Airport after the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011, and contributed to the facility’s complete restoration in just six months. He is a first-class registered architect, and holds memberships in both the AIJ (Architecture Institute of Japan) and JIA (Japan Institute of Architects).
