Nikken Sekkei’s Ashikaga Red Cross Hospital wins 3rd place at 2019 IHF Awards

Muscat, Oman, November 8, 2019. Ashikaga Red Cross Hospital, designed by Nikken Sekkei, wins bronze in the prestigious IHF/Kwang Tae Kim Grand Award category at the 2019 IHF Awards. This category recognizes excellence and achievements with proven results at the health system or facility level in multiple areas including quality and patient safety, corporate social responsibility, innovations in services delivery at affordable costs, and healthcare leadership and management practices. Since the Awards was first presented in Chicago, USA in 2015, the IHF has been recognizing innovation, excellence, outstanding achievements and best practices of hospitals and healthcare organizations.

The bronze plaque was received on stage by the Director of Ashikaga Red Cross Hospital, Dr. Satoru Komatsumoto, accompanied by Nikken Sekkei’s Executive Officer, Principal for GCC region, Dr. Fadi Jabri, Chief Architect, Akihiro Kondo, Lead Engineer, Shiro Tsukami, and Ashikaga Red Cross Hospital’s Manager, Masashi Ishihara.

Ashikaga Red Cross Hospital has been working in terms of both construction and operation with the aim of realizing a “Green Hospital” that is friendly to patients, staff, and nature. With only single-occupancy rooms, clear and intuitive floor layouts, and a strong disaster management plan built around a quake-absorbing architecture, the building facilitates everyday duties and practices, and ensures patients recuperation and privacy in a safe and comfortable environment. In addition, multiple eco-friendly and energy-saving features dramatically reduce the hospital’s energy consumption and CO2 footprint. Among these features, the most noticeable are the utilization of plentiful ground water sources to both heat and cool the facility, and the installation of solar panels and wind turbines.

Dubbed the “Next-Generation Green Hospital Project,” these initiatives have been widely acclaimed worldwide, winning several awards within Japan as well as 1st Prize in the newly-established 2016 International Federation of Hospital Engineering’s Building Award.
Over the past 10 years, Nikken Sekkei and Ashikaga Red Cross Hospital have been continuously collaborating in delivering a hospital that embodies the spirit and features of the next-generation green hospital. These efforts have been globally recognized by both medical and architectural communities.
