GADEOKDO NEW AIRPORT INTERNATIONAL DESIGN COMPETITION40BUSAN, SOUTH KOREAThis project for a new international airport on Gadeokdo Island, southwest of Busan, Korea, incorporates features such as an x-shaped passenger terminal building with a Commercial Heart at its center. All wide-body aircraft stands are placed adjacent to it, with narrow-body aircraft stands located along four short piers, no more than 200 meters away. The internal layout is intuitive, with clear sightlines to gates for stress-free navigation. The terminal integrates biophilic gardens and energy-saving solutions to cut energy consumption by 50% vs. orthodox designs. Heat pumps utilize seawater; ocean-stored blue carbon helps to support carbon neutral features. Sustainable and user-friendly, the design celebrates the beauty of Busan and Gadeokdo Island. Project collaborators include Gansam, Junglim, and Heatherwick Studio.
