MIYAKO - SHIMOJISHIMA AIRPORT TERMINAL46SELECTED PROJECTSOKINAWA, JAPANOUTSIDE VIEW OF THE DEPARTURE GATE LOUNGEIntegrated with the subtropical landscaping, the airport terminal is composed of several separate buildings. The design features elements of traditional Okinawan architecture. High open spaces, made possible by cross-laminated timber (CLT) technology, combine with the ranked ceilings of the hipped roof to create an iconic space that heightens the sense of excitement for travelers. Furthermore, the quality of the interior environment considers complex indices of thermal sensation as well as ambient factors (temperature, humidity, air flow, etc.) to achieve significant energy savings while maintaining interior environmental quality. The airport was the first in Japan to be awarded ZEB Ready certification, the government’s energy-efficient building standard.
