On December 21, Busan Metropolitan City announced that the design by Tadao Kamei and Kim Daijung of Nikken Sekkei won the international competition for “Establishing Busan Station Area as the Hub of Creative Economy.”

Criteria used by the judges to evaluate the submitted entries included understanding of the physical, social, and historical environment of Busan, urban connectivity between the original downtown and the Busan North Port redevelopment area, the role of the Busan station square, and concrete feasibility.

The winning work was highly appraised for its balance with the existing Busan station, establishment of maximum space as a station square, connectivity with the Busan North Port redevelopment area, and other features.

The project is carried out over a 3.12km2 area of Choryan-dong, Dong District, Busan, and with a national budget of 25 billion KRW and a municipal budget of 25 billion KRW, it has a total budget of 50 billion KRW, of which 28 billion KRW will be invested in this hub area alone.

The upper part of the square will be a meeting place for culture, the arts, and tourism, and a place of relaxation, and is scheduled to be a specialized culture and arts square representative of Busan. Structures in the space below gather and integrate activity spaces for creators of society, such as young people, experts, and intellectuals, and will be operated as a hub supporting economic activities forming the foundation of creative industries such as IT, startups, and knowledge.

Busan Metropolitan City will hold information sessions on the design by gathering local residents, relevant agencies, and experts; determine priority sections of the project within the range of the procured budget; and after a review of restrictive conditions posed by the site, systems, and authorities, a design contract will be signed in February, with construction launched from the second half of the year.
