Japan Joins 70+ Nations in Building Decarbonization Pledge

(TOKYO) -- Japan joined dozens of nations in a pledge for decarbonization and climate resilience at the recently concluded Buildings and Climate Global Forum held in Paris. The Declaration de Chaillot, announced at the March 7-8 conference, is a foundational document for international cooperation that enables progress towards a rapid, fair, and effective transition of the construction sector.

The summit, which brought together over 1,400 participants, was sponsored by the French government, the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), and the Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction (GlobalABC). It followed the "Buildings Breakthrough" event held at the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) in Dubai in December.

Nikken Sekkei Chairman Tadao Kamei led a company delegation to the Forum, and participated in several panel discussions, roundtables and minister-level talks. “As one of the leading practitioners of the built environment in Japan, Nikken Sekkei is looking forward to contributing our expertise and efforts,” said Global Business Department General Manager Jan Henckens.

The Forum embodied sentiment and data indicating that the volume of building renovations and sustainable projects remains inadequate next to the goal of the 2015 Paris Agreement to keep global warming below 1.5°C by the year 2100. In 2022, the construction sector accounted for 37% of global operational energy and process-related CO2 emissions, according to a GlobalABC status report. The call to action from leaders across the building value chain affirmed that current goals, while ambitious, remain achievable.
