On November 21, 2023, the “2023 Chengdu Symposium on the Integrated Development of Rail Transit and the City,” co-hosted by Nikken Sekkei and Cushman & Wakefield, was successfully held.Under the theme “Green + Smart + TOD,” the symposium featured in-depth discussions on new concepts, challenges, and technologies in the rail transit industry and future urban renewal.Ms. Mari Takada, Consul General of Japan in Chongqing, delivered remarks as a guest of honor, and Nikken Sekkei representatives Atsushi Omatsu President and CEO, Go Tanaka, Yasutaka Nishida, and Kainan Fu Executive Officer were also in attendance.
The symposium was attended by numerous leaders, experts, and engineers from the fields of rail transit and urban development in China and abroad. Hu Qinghan, Party Secretary and Chairman of Chengdu Rail Transit Group, was the first speaker, delivering a lecture titled "Entering the Rail Era and Building Rail Cities—Opening a New Phase in Rail City Development with the 'Four Priorities' Concept." Chairman Hu Qinghan introduced the experiences and approaches that Chengdu Rail Transit Group has gained in integrating rail transit and urban development based on the "Four Priorities" concept. Furthermore, experts from organizations such as China Railway Second Institute, Southwest Jiaotong University, Shenzhen Metro, Sichuan University, PCKK, China Construction Southwest Institute, Sichuan Provincial Institute of Architecture, and Shenzhen Railway Real Estate gave lectures on a variety of themes, including "Green and Smart Rail Transit and Urban Renewal," "Smart Operation and Technological Innovation," and "Qualitative Improvement of Public Transportation," leading to a lively exchange of opinions.

In his presentation, Atsushi Omatsu President and CEO stated, “Decarbonization is the most critical challenge for cities moving forward,” and introduced the core philosophy of social-environmental design advocated by Nikken Sekkei.First, public transit-led urban development achieved by optimizing connectivity through the use of public transit (such as trains and buses) and integrating stations with surrounding neighborhoods.Second, urban planning that prioritizes harmony with nature to awaken people’s longing for nature. Finally, he emphasized the importance of achieving zero-carbon architecture through performance evaluations and the active use of renewable energy, with the ultimate goal of decarbonization.
To address decarbonization, Nikken Sekkei, in partnership with the SoftBank Group, plans to establish a new company, “SynapSpark,” on December 1. This new company will serve as a hub connecting “people, architecture, and cities,” integrating digital technology into design and planning to accelerate the adoption of smart buildings.It will also work to integrate architecture and building systems and address social challenges through the use of digital technology.

At the conclusion of the symposium, participants expressed high praise for the achievements in Chengdu’s rail transit development and engaged in lively discussions regarding future policies and market applications. Takanori Tanaka Executive Officer presented successful case studies of integrated station-town development and offered valuable insights into how Japan’s successful models could be applied to Chengdu.
China is currently undergoing rapid urbanization. Nikken Sekkei plays a crucial role in innovating urban design, and will continue to leverage its extensive experience and diverse design philosophies to contribute to the qualitative improvement of social environment design in Chinese cities.
