Kokugakuin University Learning Center wins
Completed Building: Higher Education and Research at WAF Awards 2019

Amsterdam, December 5, 2019. The winner of the Completed Building: Higher Education and Research category at WAF Awards 2019 has been announced. Among all the outstanding shortlisted projects of this year’s edition, the jury has recognized Nikken Sekkei’s Kokugakuin University Learning Center as "The new learning center that solves complex urban challenges in a way that looks effortless, creating a modern shrine in the center of Tokyo. The building has a poetic relationship with both city and ancient shrine precinct".

Kokugakuin University Learning Center is a challenging expansion project that presents a new university building set on a narrow plot of land in a residential area and nearby an ancient temple. The masterful use of the land combined with an elegant and graceful design makes the building succeed in harmoniously fitting with the area despite all its “limitations”, and delivers a luminous, tranquil and expansive space for students to gather, relax, and study.

All the category winners will now compete to become World Building of the Year. The second round of presentation is scheduled for December 6, 2019.

Nikken Sekkei takes this opportunity to thank Kokugakuin University Educational Institute and all the teams who made this project and this achievement possible.
