A community-based event aimed at revitalizing the Jinnan area, where the number of select shops has declined

The Jinnan area of Shibuya Ward has long been a bustling hub for many unique apparel stores, but due to the growth of e-commerce and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of select shops has declined in recent years, and the number of shoppers has also been on a downward trend.
SHIBUYA KITAYA PARK, located in the Jinnan area, is Shibuya Ward’s first implementation of the “Park-PFI System”—a private-sector initiative for the development and management of parks that has been gaining traction nationwide in recent years—with Nikken Sekkei participating as the designated manager.
To revitalize the Jinnan area as a destination for leisure and shopping, Nikken Sekkei is leading collaboration with the local community, centered on Kitatani Park. At the “JINNAN MARKET” held last November, nearby model offices and shops set up stalls.
For this second edition of the event, held in collaboration with the nearby model office “BARK in STYLe” and “NEWSKOOL”—which promotes Shibuya’s nighttime economy—a flea market will be held involving even more local businesses and apparel industry professionals, alongside activities such as yoga and fitness.Music performances are scheduled to begin on Saturday evening to liven up the Jinnan area. Furthermore, the event is planned to be held twice a year on a regular basis, with the aim of continuously revitalizing the Jinnan area.

"YOUR PARK Project" Launched to Promote the Use of Public Spaces

Starting with this initiative, we are officially launching the “YOUR PARK Project,” which transforms underutilized urban spaces into venues for a variety of activities.
When users scan a QR code placed in a corner of the park, AR visualizations will show how the park can be used for activities such as pop-up shops, performances, and events, thereby stimulating interest in utilizing the park.Through a partnership with “shibuya good pass”—a community development service led by Hakuhodo and Mitsui & Co.—we will also be able to gather user needs via surveys. This will help promote the use of urban public spaces—which have previously seen limited utilization due to both infrastructure and operational challenges—by local businesses and stakeholders.
Nikken Sekkei is a group of experts pioneering cutting-edge social and environmental design to deliver enriching experiences to society and its people. Through this initiative, we will continue to promote the utilization of public spaces in collaboration with local communities, thereby enhancing the appeal of the city as a whole.

About the YOUR PARK Project

The YOUR PARK Project, led by Nikken Sekkei, connects owners and managers of underutilized public spaces with those who wish to use them. While the utilization of public spaces has garnered nationwide attention in recent years—driven by the adoption of the Park-PFI system and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic—challenges remain, such as a lack of equipment that prevents casual use, as well as unclear rental rules and contact points.YOUR PARK aims to promote the use of public spaces by providing “hardware”—equipment such as food stalls, tables, and chairs that can be used for various purposes—and “software”—operating rules that enable a wide range of activities.
