A tower blending nature and architecture, like a large cypress tree
This project entails a high-rise residential condominium located in Akasaka 9-chome in Tokyo’s Minato ward. The development was inspired by the cypress trees that once grew in the area in order to realize a nature-inspired skyscraper in the heart of the city. The exterior of the tower's trunk is made of wood-grain patterned fins to express tree bark. The ground and tower roots have been transformed from a cliff-like site distinct from the surrounding area into a gentle slope and restored as a “greenbelt”. The design also evokes natural elements in plan and elevation, aiming to create a symbolic presence that transforms the surrounding forest of skyscrapers into a veritable “real” forest.
