The Concept of Workshop-Style Retail Stores
Plans for the construction of “BALMUDA’s” first flagship store. The setting is a minimalist, two-story exposed-concrete building located in Tokyo’s Aoyama district, home to a cluster of global luxury brands. The interior design aims to express the brand’s worldview while discovering new value in the relationship between the products and guests. On the first floor, under the “Museum” concept, products are treated as “artworks,” allowing guests to freely appreciate them as if touring an art museum. The second floor is conceived as a “Lounge” where guests can “experience” the products, creating a bar-like space centered on dialogue between guests and staff. The counter in the center of the first floor, constructed from layered solid oak, serves as a large stage where displays can be freely rearranged to suit the occasion, while the white fixtures—composed of several interlocking modules—can be transformed into various shapes. By eliminating arbitrary design elements as much as possible, the space was conceived as a flexible, workshop-style store with a high degree of purity.
