Park Hyatt Niseko HANAZONO Chapel

A wedding chapel that embodies the Japanese aesthetic. Incorporating the “borrowed landscape” technique of Japanese architecture—where the scenery is framed by deep eaves—natural light streaming in through the high ceilings creates a sacred atmosphere. Since the space is also intended for conferences, decorative elements have been minimized as much as possible, with careful attention paid to the selection of materials and the overall design to achieve a simple yet sophisticated look. During favorable weather, the windows can be opened to blend the interior and exterior, creating a semi-outdoor space surrounded by lush forests and offering ways to enjoy the venue throughout the changing seasons. The podium, situated before a metal mesh screen that brings light into the dimly lit space, consists of simple oak volumes joined by brass wedges. By subtly expressing a cross shape through the metal hardware—which exudes a natural presence—the design accommodates both Christian and civil ceremonies.
