Assessing the safety of damaged buildings immediately after an earthquake can be helpful in issuing evacuation orders to protect lives and in making decisions about whether to continue using the buildings, providing valuable information for business continuity afterward.
In 2014, Nikken Sekkei developed NSmos, the "Nikken Sekkei Structural Monitoring System," which immediately assesses the degree of damage to buildings after an earthquake. As of March 2019, it has been installed in approximately 40 buildings, mainly office buildings, including both new and existing structures.

How NSmos works
Judgment method
Seismic sensors (accelerometers) installed inside the building measure the shaking during an earthquake. The building's condition is assessed in real time, and the degree of damage is determined immediately (within 2-3 minutes after the shaking subsides). The extent of damage is determined by comparing the sensor readings with pre-set judgment values (thresholds).
Judgment Report
The assessment results will be provided in report format. The report will assess the degree of damage on a five-tier scale from A to E, and for each tier, it will provide a written explanation of the damage situation, the need for evacuation, and whether continued use is possible. The assessment report is designed to be easy to understand even for those without expertise.
Features of NSmos
① Appropriate judgment by the designer
Setting appropriate judgment values is crucial for achieving accurate assessments. Just as no two buildings are exactly alike, judgment values vary from building to building, and even within the same building, they differ depending on the floor and direction. In NSmos, Nikken Sekkei's structural engineers accurately grasp the characteristics of each building, set appropriate judgment values, and achieve highly accurate assessments.
② Non-structural members are also included in the determination.
While understanding the extent of damage to structural elements is crucial for confirming safety, assessing business continuity requires understanding the damage to non-structural components as well. NSmos assesses the degree of damage to four non-structural components: exterior materials, ceiling materials, equipment (mounting parts), and furniture.
③ Judgment accuracy is verified through full-scale vibration experiments.
We verified the accuracy of NSmos's assessment in a full-scale vibration experiment of a 10-story building. We confirmed that NSmos can appropriately assess the damage status of the full-scale building.
④ Reports can be viewed even when you are not in the building.
With the optional cloud service, you can view assessment reports on your PC or smartphone. You can check the building's status even when you're away from the building, such as when you're at home or on a business trip.
NSmos is also useful in the event of a disaster.
① Detailed assessment of the damage situation using NSmos + structural analysis.
NSmos's assessment results can identify floors with significant damage, but they cannot determine the extent of damage to individual structural components. However, by combining NSmos with structural analysis performed during the design phase, it is possible to obtain a more detailed understanding of the damage to each component of the building's structure.
② Developing an optimal repair plan
When damage occurs due to an earthquake, determining the scope of investigation and repair is difficult, but with NSmos, it is possible to identify floors with the greatest damage. Furthermore, by combining it with the structural analysis mentioned above, it is possible to identify even more detailed damaged areas. This enables the development of optimal damage investigations and repair plans that focus on the most severely damaged areas.
