Preserving and Utilizing the Value of a Modern Japanese-Style Building Known for Its Stunning Views

Murin-an was the private residence of former Prime Minister Aritomo Yamagata. The garden, which draws water from the Lake Biwa Canal, has been designated a Place of Scenic Beauty as a masterpiece of modern garden design.
To preserve the value of the building—whose main appeal lies in its view of the garden—the renovation design was based on advanced structural analysis to minimize reinforcement, while enhancing the usability of the facility for its intended purposes. For the four charming modern structures—including the wooden main house, tea room, caretaker’s quarters, and a brick Western-style building—the plan is to reuse existing materials as much as possible and preserve their historical value through minimal renovation.
