The Rail Corridor | Lines of Life

In 2011, following the decommissioning of the Malayan Railway—which ran the length of Singapore—the Singaporean government, which had adopted a national strategy to build an eco-city known as “City in the Garden,” decided to transform the 24-kilometer-long, approximately 100-hectare site into a public space where people could relax. Nikken Sekkei’s Winning Master Plan Proposal “Lines of Life” reimagined the rail corridor as a space symbolizing the nation’s lifestyle by connecting the diverse lives of people and ecosystems along the route. The proposal systematically outlined a long-term, flexible framework and concrete strategies for creating attractive public spaces in accordance with the planning guidelines.
