SHIBUYA KITAYA PARK

Chatan Park is an urban park in Shibuya Ward that was the first in the ward to adopt the Park-PFI (Public-Private Partnership for Park Development) model and reopened in April 2021 following a renovation. The Jinnan area, bustling with numerous select shops and apparel stores, has in recent years faced the challenge of an increasing number of vacant storefronts. This project was tasked with revitalizing the area’s identity and creating new vitality through the park’s redevelopment. NIKKEN SEKKEI was involved throughout the entire process—from conceptual development in the early stages of the project to architectural and landscape design, as well as park management—and carried out project production that integrated both physical infrastructure and operational aspects. By creating a landscape open to the surrounding area and diverse spaces for activities that take advantage of the terrain’s elevation changes, the firm realized a park that fosters interaction among local residents and visitors. Even today, as a member of the designated management body, the firm leads community collaboration efforts. Through initiatives such as “JINNAN MARKET,” it provides venues and opportunities for participants in diverse fields—including art, music, and education—and is working to foster a new cultural scene in Jinnan.
